The Time My Husband Convinced Me to…

Boxing
Just having a little fun at Joe Terry’s Human Performance Lab

My husband and I honestly don’t argue about a lot. We share a love of health and fitness, of learning, of helping others, and we complement each other well. He’s socially lovable, talks to everyone and is often the life of the party. I’m the organized, logical, pragmatic one who makes sure we are at the right party at the right time.

But here we are – in a bit of a predicament. He thinks one way. I think another. And it’s been a source of stress pretty much all summer.

You see, I enjoyed being a personal trainer because it was exciting to see people make progress in their fitness journey. There was routine and accountability and encouragement — and therefore success.

Don’t get me wrong, I love teaching group fitness classes too. But it’s totally different.

I might feel effective for one hour for a given group of people, but then the next day, it’s a whole new crew, a whole new ball game. I like the commitment of seeing someone through to accomplish their goals. Plus, as I’ve explained here, I think fitness is so much more than a one-hour exercise class.

But as I’ve mentioned before (and he agrees), I just don’t have the time (or desire) to physically be away from my family anymore than I already am. Actually working as a personal trainer in a gym again just doesn’t feel like the right fit.

So … we started discussing alternative possibilities. What if I could do some sort of virtual personal training? Offer workout plans, nutritional advice, encouragement and online accountability in the form of a one-month fitness challenge.

I realize this concept is not brand new – but I can show you my scribbled notes from four years ago when God placed this idea on my heart while we were still living in Illinois.

Chris and his rose-colored glasses thinks it’s a perfect plan.

I countered that I don’t have a million dollar marketing plan to spread the word or even the technological know-how to make something like that happen.

Plus, there are lots of (much more professional) options out there. Remember that this is Everyday Faith and Fitness. Plain. Simple. Nothing fancy.

I love the idea. I just don’t want it to be an embarrassing failure.

So I’ve kept my boxing gloves on, fighting him with excuses. (I won’t even go into how profound it is that I’m wearing yoga clothes in a boxing ring…)

boxing ringBut he’s convinced me to at least put it out there and see what people think.

I want to have a Biblically-based marriage and I KNOW the importance of Ephesians 5:22:

“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.”

So here we are now. A happier marriage in the making.

And considering the possibilities…

But I’ve got to know…Would you be interested in weekly workout plans, menu ideas, online accountability via a private Facebook group, and an (optional, of course) weekly Scripture memory verse? More importantly, would you help me spread the word? A designated four-week fitness challenge, with virtual access to a personal trainer (and unofficial consultation with a sports medicine physician 😉  – plus a chance to win $100), all for $10.

Help us end the argument once and for all. Is this possible? I was originally a doubter of my husband, the eternal optimist’s, grand plans:

Make accountable, at-home fitness a reality with an affordable, yet professional option.

For once, I’d love to be wrong.

Let us know what you think by commenting below …  Just about the idea in general. (I’m sure there are lots of questions. More details regarding a specific plan in a future post if it seems like there is interest.)

Thanks, in advance, for helping us sort this out. 🙂

  1. Dawn,
It sounds like an awesome idea. You know better than most that if you operate out of faith rather than fear great things will happen. So have faith that you will reach the right people and make a positive impact on their lives. Don’t fear “embarrassing failure”- you’ll never know unless you try. And if at the end of the day, this doesn’t work out, you can say “See, Chris, I told you so” and go with that million dollar marketing plan

    1. Thanks! 🙂 You know I’ve never liked failing. (Whoa – sadly – the song lyrics to Life’s a Dance just came to mind!) Thanks for the encouragement. 🙂

  2. Tell me where to sign up:) I would love an accountability partner (that wasn’t my husband!) for my goals, and I stink at designing my own workouts, so that would be a huge help! Love!

  3. Yes I would-think it would be awesome-a lot of your time and trouble for individual people since we are all capable of different things and then you tie in w or/no w,ork, gym availability/food, young/old, menopause etc. I say go for it:)

  4. Of course I think it is a great idea! I would love that. I don’t get to he gym liked I used to and while I do things here and there sometimes motivating myself after a long day of teaching (hubby works out in am time slot) is a hard thing to do. Plus I miss my baby!!! Well he is not a baby anymore but you know what I’m saying. So have you thought through all of the logistics of it all? How much would you charge? Are there different levels of service? Level one u get a few things and level two more and so on? I would take your advice and workout plans any day!! With joe getting older it makes me wonder how the kiddos would have gotten along. Good luck with this endeavor. I am intrigued and interested in what you come up with.

    1. I hear ya! Having a baby definitely changes things! It is funny to think about the boys playing in your big side lot!
I’ll post details Monday. My goals are intense (but modifiable for any level), effective, and affordable. 🙂

    1. Thanks! Yeah, I don’t do complicated routines either! 🙂 The workouts I’ll use for this challenge will be full-body interval style (and I’m planning on doing a music/playlist post before it begins), so it’ll be as Body & Soul as I can make it without being a full choreographed class! Hope you like it! 🙂
