School’s out and the temperatures are soaring! Do you have a family fitness plan for the season?
Here are a few tips to be sure your family has a happy, healthy summer:
1. Take walks (and/or bike rides) together as a family. Longer days means more hours of sunlight for leisurely post-dinner strolls. And, as you may remember, leisurely walking (LINK) can help aid in stubborn fat loss.
2. Learn a new sport together. Whether it’s hitting balls at the golf range or taking family tennis lessons, spending time together in a fitness-focused activity will improve everyone’s health and happiness (barring any fits of rage or sore losers on the court, of course).
3. Plan family outings to a nearby park or nature center. Playing tag, Frisbee, and catch are great ways to increase the heart rate and strengthen the family bond.
4. Sign up for an organized race. Whether it’s a 5K with 1 mile or walk options, or a triathlon relay (I’ve seen lots of teams with very young swimmers!), participating in an event can be such a great experience for any age! If you’re interested in a beginner or “some experience” 5K plan, I’d love to help!
5. Explore your local farmers’ markets together. Let your children select fresh fruits and vegetables to try. Giving them independence and control increase the likelihood they will be excited to eat the amazingly fresh produce available this time of year!
6. Stay hydrated. Everyone needs to drink plenty of (preferably plain) water. Add chunks of real fruit and ice if needed, but try to limit sugary juices and sports beverages. Plus, it’s the perfect time of year to make your own popsicles!
7. Maintain a somewhat predictable lunch routine. Check out this free, interactive “Healthy-ish Kid-Friendly Lunches” printable set for ideas on how to keep lunchtime hassle-free this summer!
Summer can be such a magical time in a young child’s life. Hoping you can make some memories with your families this summer – and find a little fitness along the way too!
