We interrupt the faith and fitness-focused posts to explore a little “everyday” item – technology.
I chuckle when I remember I have a Master’s Degree in Education with a Specialization in Integrating Technology in the Classroom. (I know, could that be any wordier? That’s really how it’s written. Minus the italics of course).
You’d think with an advanced education like that, this blogging thing would be a breeze.
Ha! That degree? Super-useful during the two years I was working on it.
Think a classroom blog where twenty-four aspiring fifth grade writers got to publish their essays and poetry for the (password-protected) world to see. Or, the wiki pages two classes set up sharing eco-friendly living tips.
But now, not so much. Technology is a funny thing. And it changes at practically warp speed.
Anything I learned then feels so outdated. Was I one step up from using a typewriter?
Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube channels. Whoa. It’s kind of crazy to wrap your head around.
And then there’s Facebook. It feels familiar. Most people have a moderate amount of experience with it. But make anything other than a personal page, and watch out. The rules totally change!
I’ve learned that when I post something with a link on the Everyday Faith and Fitness page, only 20% of the people who have liked the page will actually see it. That’s frustrating.
I understand it’s a business move because they want me to pay to promote the post, but that’s annoying (because I’m not making any income from this blog). So, I often end up sharing the post on my personal account as well. My apologies to those who are receiving things twice. But that’s also the only way I can tag people.
The best way to make sure you don’t miss a post thanks to Facebook’s protocol, is to SUBSCRIBE TO THE BLOG.
All that this means is you will get the blog posts (typically Monday and Thursday mornings), delivered to your inbox. If you rely on Facebook to update you, it’s likely you’ll miss something.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not brazen enough to think that what I write is so profound that you don’t possibly want to miss anything. It’s just frustrating to put effort into something that you know is being controlled by a technological giant who wants payment for every post.
And, just to clarify, there is also a “Newsletter” sign-up box in the lower right corner of every page, which is different from the blog subscription. It’s just a once a month update.
Of course, your information is private. I’ll never share your email with anyone. (I honestly don’t even know how that works – another aspect of technology that is beyond me). Ah, yes, technology….
Now, for those who have stuck around this long to finish reading the post, I do want to share something very “everyday” with you, that’s well, sort of technology related.
Given the definition “use of science to invent practical, helpful items to solve problems,” I’d like to suggest …. TOILET PAPER as an example of technology. 🙂
Sure, it’s a bit of a stretch, but I found this little tip to be extremely enlightening. Charmin (and I’m sure many other toilet paper manufacturers as well; that’s just the preferred brand in our household) have complicated the purchasing of this very practical, problem solver (at least for consumers looking for the best deal) by selling 5, FIVE! different sizes of rolls!
If you’re calculating cost per square (which is a bit extreme I know), consider these handy calculations:
- Regular = 88 sheets
- Large = 132 sheets (1.5 rolls)
- Double = 176 sheets (2 rolls)
- Giant = 220 sheets (2.5 rolls)
- Mega = 352 sheets (4 rolls)
Sometimes you think you’re getting a really great deal, only to find out the size of the roll is completely different!
Yep – Facebook. Toilet Paper. One and the same to me today.
Thoughts on Facebook personal accounts versus community like pages? Toilet paper brands? (Any suggestions for comparable brands to Charmin Ultra Strong?) Sizes? (Mega hardly fits on our holder). Comment below! (And don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to the actual blog 🙂 )
