So, what do you like to do for fun? Sounds kind of like an awkward interview question, at best, (poor pickup line, at least). But do you even remember the last time you did something just for fun?
Our seemingly never-ending list of things we have to do often consumes our time. Business meetings. Grocery shopping. House cleaning. Car washing. All things that could potentially have some fun involved – depending on your viewpoint and personality, I suppose. But how many of us actually schedule time to do something purely for entertainment?
Leisure time activities is actually another one of those areas that (maybe surprisingly) can have a huge impact on our health and wellness. Simply by doing something fun, we can:

- Manage stress – Taking time to do something you enjoy will ultimately allow you to deal with stressful situations with a clearer mind. Plus, we all know the unfortunate tendency of eating to deal with stress. Calm the mind. Curb the crazy eating.
- Reduce depression – Participating in something that brings you happiness will obviously, well, make you happier. 🙂 If you’re wanting to stay in bed all day, it’s very unlikely you’re going to get a great workout in, and exercise, of course, will help make you healthier.
- Combine leisure and exercise – If you can get a little exercise in while enjoying a leisure activity – bonus points! Golf, gardening, biking, dancing – all things that, again, could potentially be entertaining AND exercise. {Although, as my husband will attest, me on a golf course is definitely not going to lower anyone’s stress level!)
It seems we often get so carried away with “life” that many of us forget to have a little fun along the way. We go through our to-do lists, checking things off but constantly adding more. And just like that the day is over…the week…the month…the year…the life… (Not to be all depressing on you, but I did mention I’m a realist, right?) James 4:14 reminds us,
“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
My hope is simply that you remember to ENJOY the time you have with those you love. Play a game of kickball. Skip rocks on the lake. Dance and sing along. Whatever it is you choose to do, find something that brings you happiness and refreshment.
So, now I repeat: What do you like to do for fun? Or, even better: What are you going to do this weekend for a little rejuvenating entertainment?
